Silver's Threads by , Summary

...long awaited sequel to Warp and Weft ...journey now on the Silken Web where... ...the Wheel of the year has turned twice since Sybille disappeared mysteriously and the women charged with fi nding her have grown beyond recognition..., as has the group who gathered from all realms to help... ...Sam fl ew through the Aethers, unfettered, free of all human burden and pain. A cool, fragrant wind, ruffl ed long fl ight quills, all memory gone, of who or what she was, had been or ever would be, in that moment. Carried under a cloak of musky-sweet feathers; safe, a gentle recall emerged of warm arms and soft down. ...Then, something was pulling at her, tugging at her mind insistently; ‘Sam,’ she heard. ‘Sam, come back, it’s not your time to leave.’ ...An acrid odour seared her nostrils; offensive, as burnt feathers or hair and she fought to maintain her blissful fl ight away from the realms of pain and dark matters. ...A voice grew stronger, this one deeper, a masculine melodic tone; Morgan sang to her, calling her back... ‘Life is a struggle when we see through the veil... hands become fragile; skin fair and pale. Come home from the dreaming... come back to this place, now’s no time to travel, come home from this space. You are a dreamer, one who sees true... memories awaken ...feather’s blue-black hue. Free fl ying... falling... then higher you soar, come home from your dreaming... there is more... so much more.’ ...Come with them on the next stage of the search as Sam learns disturbing and heartbreaking things about her passage through the ‘Between’.

Oak Flat by Lauren Redniss Summary

NATIONAL BESTSELLER • NEW YORK TIMES EDITORS’ CHOICE • A powerful work of visual nonfiction about three generations of an Apache family struggling to protect sacred land from a multinational mining corporation, by MacArthur “Genius” and National Book Award finalist Lauren Redniss, the acclaimed author of Thunder & Lightning. “Lauren Redniss has produced a supernova. . . . A vivid, searing, indelible act of witness.”—Patrick Radden Keefe, New York Times bestselling author of Say Nothing NAMED ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY KIRKUS REVIEWS Oak Flat is a serene high-elevation mesa that sits above the southeastern Arizona desert, fifteen miles to the west of the San Carlos Apache Indian Reservation. For the San Carlos tribe, Oak Flat is a holy place, an ancient burial ground and religious site where Apache girls celebrate the coming-of-age ritual known as the Sunrise Ceremony. In 1995, a massive untapped copper reserve was discovered nearby. A decade later, a law was passed transferring the area to a private company, whose planned copper mine will wipe Oak Flat off the map—sending its natural springs, petroglyph-covered rocks, and old-growth trees tumbling into a void. Redniss’s deep reporting and haunting artwork anchor this mesmerizing human narrative. Oak Flat tells the story of a race-against-time struggle for a swath of American land, which pits one of the poorest communities in the United States against the federal government and two of the world’s largest mining conglomerates. The book follows the fortunes of two families with profound connections to the contested site: the Nosies, an Apache family whose teenage daughter is an activist and leader in the Oak Flat fight, and the Gorhams, a mining family whose patriarch was a sheriff in the lawless early days of Arizona statehood. The still-unresolved Oak Flat conflict is ripped from today’s headlines, but its story resonates with foundational American themes: the saga of westward expansion, the resistance and resilience of Native peoples, and the efforts of profiteers to control the land and unearth treasure beneath it while the lives of individuals hang in the balance.

Lucien's forgery of his brother-in-law's signature almost bankrupts David, who has to sell the secret of his invention to business rivals. Lucien is about to commit suicide when he is approached by a sham Jesuit priest, the Abb? Carlos Herrera: this, in another guise, is the escaped convict Vautrin whom Balzac had already presented in Le P?re Goriot. Herrera takes Lucien under his protection and they drive off to Paris, there to begin a fresh assault on the capital.

A Dictionary of Geography Pdf/ePub eBook Author: F. J. Monkhouse

A Dictionary of Geography by F. J. Monkhouse Summary

The geographer seeks to describe the diverse features of the earth's surface, to explain if possible how these features have come to be what they are, and to discuss how they influence the distribution of man with his diverse activities. Geography therefore stands transitionally yet centrally between the natural sciences, the social studies, and the humanities. While in its concept and content it is an integrated whole, of necessity it impinges on the associated disciplines, and inevitably makes use of a wide range of kindred terminology. In compiling the 3,400 entries for this dictionary, the main criterion for inclusion has been usage. Geographical textbooks and periodicals have been systematically combed, and where a term has been used in a specific geographical context, or in a specialist sense which differs from general practice or popular usage, it has been included. Foreign words are listed where they have been accepted into English geographical literature, especially where no satisfactory translation exists. Cross-references are freely given, printed in small capitals, where it is necessary to assist the user in tracing cognate and supplementary entries, or where the meaning of the word thus shown is essential to the understanding of the entry. The emphasis throughout is on specific factual information, conveniently accessible on a strict alphabetical basis, rather than a bare definition. Statistical material and formulae are appended, where it would seem helpful, in the form of tables under the relevant entries. Since this dictionary is neither a gazetteer nor a compendium of current affairs, lists of countries and capitals, regional names and international groupings are not included, since these can be found conveniently elsewhere. The five hundred and seventy-two additional entries to this dictionary, together with a few minor modifications to the existing material, are the result of extensive correspondence and discussion since the appearance of the firs
