Road Signs on the Journey Home by , Summary

This is an intriguing and inspiring collection of devotionals based on messages gleaned from signs along the roads we travel. It can be meaningful to adults, fascinating to children, and even helpful to youth learning to drive. Each message is supported by words of wisdom from the ancient Book of Proverbs. If we will just slow down and observe, even something as seemingly mundane as a road sign can convey a powerful lesson. “Mr. Brown, in the future, I would appreciate it if you would pay attention to them (road signs) and act accordingly.” As he handed me the ticket, he said, ‘Have a good day.’” —North Carolina State Trooper “My goodness, Bernie, this is amazing. Never thought of this ... but it is simple and profound. We can see road signs differently after reading your devotionals. The pictures are wonderful, too ... and Proverbs come alive in a new way.” —Lucy Adams, Author and Cofounder of the Western NC Christian Writers Fellowship “Our city, like others, devotes a tremendous amount of resources toward placing directional and informational signs along its streets for guidance and to insure the public’s safety. It is amazing how Bernie Brown has extracted additional meaning from many of these road signs to assist each of us on our individual life’s journey. This fascinating little book will not only inspire you but will assist you in passing your ‘spiritual driver’s license’ test.” —Steve “Thunder” Tumlin, Jr., Mayor, city of Marietta, GA (Bernie’s home since 1971; he was named Marietta Citizen of the Year in 1990)

Someone To Crawl Back To by Phillip Gardner Summary

Someone To Crawl Back To is a novel-in-stories, a collection of hearts in search of what theyOCOve always wanted or what theyOCOve eternally lost. Their common ground is The Paradise Lounge. The death of a marriage, Joshua and Rene ServeranceOCOs, forms the spine of the book, but included in this small community of seekers are George Scarborough and his softball-playing wife; Evander Baker, who helps his sister bury a bag of chocolate chip cookies near the septic line; and Warren Oxendine, whose wife buys a vibrator at a yard sale. Structured more like a Robert Altman film than a traditional novel, reading Someone To Crawl Back To is like going to The Paradise Lounge for a drink, slipping inside a patronOCOs skin, going home with that person, then coming back to The Paradise and leaving with another sojourner of love. Trucker1954 by Doug Peck Summary

This is the story of my first year as a long-haul truck driver. I started driving after I retired from a long career in the aerospace industry. For eight weekends before I retired I attended the Roadmaster truck driving school and then passed the tests at the DMV to obtain my Commercial Drivers License (CDL). This eBook contains: - stories, photos, and music videos from my year Over The Road - lots of technical info and several training videos on the nuts and bolts of truck driving - tips and advice from lessons learned on the road - my truck driving cartoon series called "The Rusty Lugnut Funny Pages". To give you a taste of it, here is an excerpt from one of my stories: "My instructor was still clinging to the side of the truck when this all started, so now he was along for the ride. His right arm was holding onto the door frame and his left arm was waving in the air like a cowboy on a bucking bronco. The other students were rolling with laughter. Finally he yelled "Push in the clutch!" I did that and the truck stopped bouncing and came to a stop. When the dust cleared I gave him an embarrassed look and said "Sorry 'bout that." He rolled his eyes and climbed down and said "Next".

American Soldier at 13 Yrs Old Wwii by James R. Clark Summary

I was 13 years old and clearly remember World War II in 1943 and patriotism was at its' highest. Young men 18 years old and men up to 40 years old were being drafted into the military service. I was tall for my age at 13. I went to the draft board and told them I was 18, they believed me and I was drafted into the army. After 1 year of military duty, I was honorably discharged after returning home. I was inducted into the American Legion as the nation's youngest legionnaire. At the age of 17 and with the permission of my mother, I volunteered to go back into the army and I was sent to serve in Berlin in 1947. At this time in Berlin, the Russians had set up a blockade around West Berlin, trapping American, French and British Armies. When in Berlin, I was given the opportunity to guard some of the top Nazis at Spandau Prison. After my duty in Germany I served in Korea on the front line during the war. Also served in the Vietnam War and was wounded in Vietnam. After 22 years of Army service I retired.

All My Road Before Me by C. S. Lewis Summary

A repackaged edition of the revered author’s diary from his early twenties—a thought-provoking work that reveals his earliest thinking about war, atheism, religion, and humanity. While serving his country in the Great War, C. S. Lewis’ the great British writer, scholar, lay theologian, broadcaster, and Christian apologist—made a pact with a close friend and fellow soldier. If one of them died, the survivor would take care of his family—a promise Lewis honored. Developing a deep friendship with his fallen friend’s mother, Jane King Moore, Lewis moved into the Moore household after the war. Returning to Oxford, the twenty-three-year old Lewis—then a staunch atheist—struggled to adapt to life in post-war England. Eager to help the tormented young man, Jane encouraged him keep a diary of his day-to-day life. Those reflections are collected in this illuminating journal. Covering five remarkable years in Lewis's life, All My Road Before Me charts the inspirations and intellectual and spiritual development of a man whose theology and writing—including Mere Christianity, The Screwtape Letters, The Great Divorce, The Chronicles of Narnia, and many other beloved classics—has had immense influence on the Christian world.

In this wise and moving novel, Richard Wagamese shares that gift of magic with readers as well.

Democratizing Innovation by Eric Von Hippel Summary

The process of user-centered innovation: how it can benefit both users and manufacturers and how its emergence will bring changes in business models and in public policy. Innovation is rapidly becoming democratized. Users, aided by improvements in computer and communications technology, increasingly can develop their own new products and services. These innovating users—both individuals and firms—often freely share their innovations with others, creating user-innovation communities and a rich intellectual commons. In Democratizing Innovation, Eric von Hippel looks closely at this emerging system of user-centered innovation. He explains why and when users find it profitable to develop new products and services for themselves, and why it often pays users to reveal their innovations freely for the use of all.The trend toward democratized innovation can be seen in software and information products—most notably in the free and open-source software movement—but also in physical products. Von Hippel's many examples of user innovation in action range from surgical equipment to surfboards to software security features. He shows that product and service development is concentrated among "lead users," who are ahead on marketplace trends and whose innovations are often commercially attractive. Von Hippel argues that manufacturers should redesign their innovation processes and that they should systematically seek out innovations developed by users. He points to businesses—the custom semiconductor industry is one example—that have learned to assist user-innovators by providing them with toolkits for developing new products. User innovation has a positive impact on social welfare, and von Hippel proposes that government policies, including R&D subsidies and tax credits, should be realigned to eliminate biases against it. The goal of a democratized user-centered innovation system, says von Hippel, is well worth striving for. An electronic version of this book is available under a Creative Commons license.

The Death and Life of Great American Cities by Jane Jacobs Summary

Thirty years after its publication, The Death and Life of Great American Cities was described by The New York Times as "perhaps the most influential single work in the history of town planning....[It] can also be seen in a much larger context. It is first of all a work of literature; the descriptions of street life as a kind of ballet and the bitingly satiric account of traditional planning theory can still be read for pleasure even by those who long ago absorbed and appropriated the book's arguments." Jane Jacobs, an editor and writer on architecture in New York City in the early sixties, argued that urban diversity and vitality were being destroyed by powerful architects and city planners. Rigorous, sane, and delightfully epigrammatic, Jacobs's small masterpiece is a blueprint for the humanistic management of cities. It is sensible, knowledgeable, readable, indispensable. The author has written a new foreword for this Modern Library edition.

Across America by Motor-Cycle by Mark L. Hunnibell,C.K. Shepherd Summary

In 1919, Charles Kenilworth (“C.K.”) Shepherd—a veteran of World War I and former British Royal Air Force Captain—took some “time off” after his service. He traveled to the United States to “trot ’round America” on a brand new, top-of-the-line Henderson 4-cylinder motorcycle he dubbed “Lizzie.” Just eleven days after arriving in the States, Shepherd and Lizzie headed west on a pioneer adventure. He journeyed to California on America’s “highways,” which he soon realized consisted of dirt roads—several of which were impassable. After arriving in San Francisco two months later, he sold his motorcycle on the street. In 1922, he memorialized this journey for eternity in his book Across America by Motor-Cycle. Shepherd’s tale is an informative and engaging reflection of the trials and tribulations of an Englishman’s solo adventure across the United States when there were no such things as interstate highways or even good street maps. His honest observations about America’s roads, history, and culture—through the lens of a British “observer”—are revealing and often humorous. One hundred years later, Shepherd’s book remains a classic. Mark Hunnibell—a former United States Air Force Captain—discovered Shepherd’s book while beginning to restore his own “basket case” 1919 Henderson motorcycle that his father had given him decades earlier. Realizing it was the same make, model, and year owned by Shepherd, Hunnibell imagined retracing Shepherd’s journey. But Hunnibell realized such a major feat would go well beyond mechanical restoration. He had to get the old Henderson functioning like new to contemplate such an arduous expedition, but he also had to deduce Shepherd’s path when the British adventurer had not included a map or specific itinerary. Hunnibell set about analyzing the book word-by-word in a bold attempt to discover, document, and reverse-engineer the smallest details of Shepherd’s ride. As the research progressed, revelations of Shepherd’s route and other amazing details emerged while Hunnibell also became fascinated by C.K.’s cultural reflections. Hunnibell also realized that the British explorer had an occasional tendency to embellish, apparently hoping it would make his book even more appealing. It occurred to Hunnibell that readers of C.K.’s 1922 book—and even new ones—would be even more inspired and entertained by the journey if they had the benefit of a complete and accurate explanation of as many details as possible. He sought to answer fundamental questions such as: Who was “C.K. Shepherd” and what was his background? Why did he embark on this trip? Whatever happened to him? This Fully Annotated Centennial Edition contains nearly 1,000 exhaustively researched notes, original photographs (many previously unpublished that had been taken by Shepherd himself), illustrations, and rich period details and explanations. It also contains a foreword by C.K.’s son, Dr. Charles Drury Shaw, who has graciously supported this celebration. Although some details of Shepherd’s journey will forever remain a mystery, this Fully Annotated Centennial Edition—which includes the complete text of the original book—stands as the definitive work on the subject.
