Indelible by , Summary

An Indie Next Pick A masterful, "seductive" debut novel about fate, family secrets, and the stories our bodies tell (NYTBR). Magdalena has an unsettling gift. She sees the truth about people written on their skin--names, dates, details both banal and profound--and her only relief from the onslaught of information is to take off her glasses and let the world recede. Mercifully, her own skin is blank. When she meets Neil, she is intrigued to see her name on his cheek, and she is drawn into a family drama that began more than half a century before, when Neil's father, Richard, was abandoned at birth by his mother, a famous expatriate novelist. As secrets are revealed among forgotten texts in the archives of Paris, on a dusty cattle ranch in the American West, along ancient pilgrim paths, and in a run-down apartment in post-Soviet Lithuania, the novel's unforgettable characters converge--by chance, or perhaps by fate--and Magdalena's uncanny ability may be the key to their happiness.

Indelible by Laurie Buchanan Summary

When a sniper killed his partner, Sean McPherson was injured in the ambush. Now an ex-cop, he takes a job at a writing retreat in the Pacific Northwest. At Pines & Quill, he hopes to heal and put his life back together in the Zen-like capacity of groundskeeper and all-around handyman. Sniper, Jason Hughes, blames McPherson for the loss of more than ten million dollars’ worth of heroin—and he wants revenge. In the guise of a New York City limo driver working on a sizzling tell-all memoir, Hughes arrives at Pines & Quill along with three other writers in residence: a bohemian psychic taking a break from grueling work as a forensic intuitive, a bitter divorcée who wants to open herself to a new life, and a vibrant and resilient potter navigating life from a wheelchair. With conflicting agendas, uncertain loyalties, and romantic entanglements at play, Hughes finds it difficult to get McPherson in his sights. Gradually, he forms a different plan, one that threatens the lives of everyone at the retreat.

Indelible Inequalities in Latin America by Luis Reygadas,Paul Gootenberg Summary

Since the earliest years of European colonialism, Latin America has been a region of seemingly intractable inequalities, marked by a stark divide between the haves and the have-nots. This collection illuminates the diverse processes that have combined to produce and reproduce inequalities in Latin America, as well as some of the implications of those processes for North Americans. Anthropologists, cultural critics, historians, and political scientists from North and South America offer new and varied perspectives, building on the sociologist Charles Tilly’s relational framework for understanding enduring inequalities. While one essay is a broad yet nuanced analysis of Latin American inequality and its persistence, another is a fine-grained ethnographic view of everyday life and aspirations among shantytown residents living on the outskirts of Lima. Other essays address topics such as the initial bifurcation of Peru’s healthcare system into one for urban workers and another for the rural poor, the asymmetrical distribution of political information in Brazil, and an evolving Cuban “aesthetics of inequality,” which incorporates hip-hop and other transnational cultural currents. Exploring the dilemmas of Latin American inequalities as they are playing out in the United States, a contributor looks at new immigrant Mexican farmworkers in upstate New York to show how undocumented workers become a vulnerable rural underclass. Taken together, the essays extend social inequality critiques in important new directions. Indelible Ann by Meghan P. Browne Summary

A folksy, larger-than-life picture book biography about Ann Richards, the late governor of Texas who has inspired countless women in politics today. Dorothy Ann Willis hailed from a small Texas town, but early on she found her voice and the guts to use it. During her childhood in San Diego and her high school years back in Texas (when she dropped the "Dorothy"), Ann discovered a spark and passion for civic duty. It led her all the way to Washington, DC, where she, along with other girls from around the country, learned about the business of politics. Fast forward to Ann taking on the political boys' club: she became county commissioner, then state treasurer, and finally governor of Texas. In this stunning picture book biography, full of vim, vigor, and folksy charm, two Texan creators take us through the life of the legendary "big mouth, big hair" governor of Texas, a woman who was inspired by Eleanor Roosevelt, and in turn became an inspiration to Hillary Clinton and countless others.

Indelible Ink: The Trials of John Peter Zenger and the Birth of America's Free Press by Richard Kluger Summary

"Vivid storytelling built on exacting research." —Bill Keller, New York Times Book Review In 1735, struggling printer John Peter Zenger scandalized colonial New York by launching a small newspaper, the New-York Weekly Journal. The newspaper was assailed by the new British governor as corrupt and arrogant, and as being a direct challenge against the prevailing law that criminalized any criticism of the royal government. Zenger was thrown in jail for nine months before his landmark one-day trial on August 4, 1735, in which he was brilliantly defended by Andrew Hamilton. In Indelible Ink, Pulitzer Prize–winning social historian Richard Kluger has fashioned the first book-length narrative of the Zenger case, rendering with colorful detail its setting in old New York and the vibrant personalities of its leading participants, whose virtues and shortcomings are assessed with fresh scrutiny often at variance with earlier accounts.

Indelible Adventures by Terence Wallis Summary

Shortly after his father’s death, Terence began writing a weekly blog about his life adventures as a memoir for his children. What begins as a journey of grief evolves into a series of evocative, candid and often humorous adventures about his life as a child in rural Australia to his current cosmopolitan life in Canada. This emotional and powerful series of short stories begin with his father’s diagnosis of terminal brain cancer and his stark realization that he knows so very little about his father and the harsh reality that he only has a short time to get to know him. The similarities between his relationship with his children and the one he had with his father mirror each other, especially given his high demands as a senior executive that take him away from his family on a regular basis. His decision to change the nature of his relationship with his children beginning with his weekly story allows him to gain perspective in his life, which undoubtedly leads to wholesale change. His now celebrated blog is read by more than 30,000 people from around the world and is regarded, as a weekly “must read”.

Indelible by Peter Helton Summary

In this series debut, an art school teaching gig turns into a high-stakes murder investigation and a “fun-filled romp through the art-strewn countryside” (Booklist). Against his better judgement, laidback painter and private investigator Chris Honeysett has accepted a role as tutor at the Bath Arts Academy and agreed to take part in an exhibition. But preparations are disrupted by a series of peculiar events: a naked, wild-haired figure is glimpsed running through the woods; strange symbols are carved onto trees and gateposts; a metal sculpture takes on a mysterious life of its own. The incidents, which are initially assumed to be student pranks, escalate in menace, until one of Honeysett’s fellow exhibitors lies dead—and Honeysett finds himself the prime murder suspect. It’s clear that someone is trying to frame him. But who? And why? Full charming local color and eccentric yet believable characters, Indelible is a “suspenseful, well-plotted” chapter in a British cozy mystery series that’s “a lot of fun” (Publishers Weekly). “A jam-packed Hieronymus Bosch canvas filled with the good, the bad and the just plain wacky.” —Kirkus Reviews

Indelible City by Chew Yi Wei Summary

The city is a place laced with the material and the immaterial, the visible and invisible. There are the migratory lines trod by our ancestors, the scent of our foodways, the flight of birds, the sigh of an old school, a demolished rooftop, an unassuming lamppost, fading tongues, empty chairs, extroverted harbours. These are the indelible marks that layer our city, that make up where we are, and who we are. Drawing together her memories growing up in Singapore and lyrical observations of the nation’s ever-changing landscape, Yi Wei creates an evocative portrait of the city and what it means to her. Beautifully rendered and delicately written, Indelible City brings you on an intimate sojourn with Yi Wei as she explores issues of home, identity and place.

The Indelible Shadow by MARCOS NIETO PALLARÉS Summary

Hard-boiled detective fiction in its purest form, comparable to Seven or the True Detective series. “I read a lot of detective fiction and about crime, but never before had a story left me with such a long literary hangover. For more than a week I was incapable of beginning any other book. So, what distinguishes this book from others? Many things. Above all, it is the passion with which it is written, the personalities of the characters, the explosive ending, the writer's imagination and much more.” Rebelión de Libros, Blog Intense, brutal and crude. This novel is a rollercoaster of emotions with an unexpected ending. While the novel is not lengthy, it has all of what is required for it to be an outstanding and complete story.” “Marcos Nieto is a very particular writer, very much a chameleon. One of his traits is to always present us with very meticulous work, but above all great content.” El Escritorio del Búho, Blog. “The Indelible Shadow offers intelligence and clarity to a story that (with the forewarning of a potential spoiler) provides intrigue through its characters, such as the protagonist and narrator or his partner, the ever-present cervantine counterpoint, all which break away from the stereotypes of the genre.” “For these reasons, the Indelible Shadow is an excellent suggestion for lovers of suspense and thrillers. You will not be disappointed, not for a second.” Falsaria, Blog On the whole, a realistic police story, nothing fanciful and quite harsh, no holds barred. We are presented with dissimilar characters, all with their own past and intricate personalities, helping us to understand their actions. The perfect book for any fan of crime fiction.” Devorador de Libros, Blog “I’m a big fan of the genre and I can say that for a long time I had not been engrossed by a book, one that intrigued me, kept me captivated right until the end, that was until the Indelible Shadow.
