The perfect thriller." —Robert Crais When darkness closes in—he's your last, best hope. Evan Smoak returns in Gregg Hurwitz’s #1 international bestselling Orphan X series in Out of the Dark. Taken from a group home at age twelve, Evan Smoak was raised and trained as part of the Orphan Program, an off-the-books operation designed to create deniable intelligence assets—i.e. assassins. Evan was Orphan X. He broke with the Program, using everything he learned to disappear and reinvent himself as the Nowhere Man, a man who helps the truly desperate when no one else can. But now Evan's past is catching up to him. Someone at the very highest level of government has been trying to eliminate every trace of the Orphan Program by killing all the remaining Orphans and their trainers. After Evan's mentor and the only father he ever knew was killed, he decided to strike back. His target is the man who started the Program and who is now the most heavily guarded person in the world: the President of the United States. But President Bennett knows that Orphan X is after him and, using weapons of his own, he's decided to counter-attack. Bennett activates the one man who has the skills and experience to track down and take out Orphan X—the first recruit of the Program, Orphan A. With Evan devoting all his skills, resources, and intelligence to find a way through the layers of security that surround the President, suddenly he also has to protect himself against the deadliest of opponents. It's Orphan vs. Orphan with the future of the country—even the world—on the line.

Out of the Darkness by Steve Taylor Summary

Out of the Darkness tells the stories of more than 20 people who have undergone permanent spiritual awakening after intense trauma and turmoil in their lives. Although psychological turmoil often has no positive effects, for some people, it can be the catalyst for a kind of 'spiritual alchemy', transforming the 'base metal' of suffering into the 'gold' of intense well-being and freedom. Read about the young woman who became 'enlightened' after suffering terrible injuries in the 7/7 tube bombings in London, the man who became paralysed after falling from a bridge onto a river bed, but now lives in a state of permanent bliss, and the recovering alcoholic who shifted to a permanent state of enlightenment after hitting 'rock bottom' and losing everything. The author has also interviewed several spiritual teachers whose original awakening occurred after intense psychological turmoil, including Eckhart Tolle and Catherine Ingram. In addition to telling these people's stories, Out of the Darkness explains why turmoil has this 'awakening' effect, and illustrates the almost infinite capacity of human beings to overcome suffering. It suggests that, so long as we have the courage to face up to and accept negative situations, there is nothing for us to fear. But perhaps most importantly, it shows how natural spiritual awakening is to human beings, and how close it is to all of us.

Depression - Out of the Darkness and Into the Light by W. Daniel Hale Summary

The need for churches and other faith communities to reach out and care for those suffering with depression has never been greater. Depression is now recognized as one of our most serious public health concerns. Each year more than ten percent of American adults experience a major depressive episode, and more than twenty percent will experience at least one episode over their lifetime. Furthermore, we know that depression is the major risk factor for suicide, now the second leading cause of death in the 10 – 34 year old age group and the fourth leading cause of death among adults ages 35 – 54. We also know that depression is a significant risk factor for substance abuse, another of our most serious health concerns. While we might want to believe that our religious faith can protect us from depression and suicide, we know that’s not true. We have heard too many stories of religious leaders and members of deeply religious families who have suffered from depression and taken their own lives. We need to recognize that no group is exempt from this terrible illness. Depression is found among the young and old, the religious and nonreligious, and all ethnic and racial groups. In Depression - Out of the Darkness and Into the Light, Dan Hale, a psychologist and national leader in health ministries, draws on his own his own struggles with depression, his work as a psychotherapist, and his experiences as a father who lost a daughter to depression, to offer guidance for individuals and families impacted by depression and for congregations that recognize the importance of ministering to those suffering from this terrible illness.

Out of the Dark by David Weber Summary

The launch of a new science fiction adventure series--by the New York Times-best selling author of the Safehold series and the Honor Harrington series The Galactic Hegemony has been around a long time, and it likes stability--the kind of stability that member species like the aggressive, carnivorous Shongairi tend to disturb. So when the Hegemony Survey Force encountered a world whose so-called "sentients"--"humans," they called themselves--were almost as bad as the Shongairi themselves, it seemed reasonable to use the Shongairi to neutralize them before they could become a second threat to galactic peace. And if the Shongairi took a few knocks in the process, all the better. Now, Earth is conquered. The Shongairi have arrived in force, and humanity's cities lie in radioactive ruins. In mere minutes, more than half the human race has died. Master Sergeant Stephen Buchevsky, who thought he was being rotated home from his latest tour in Afghanistan, finds himself instead prowling the back country of the Balkans, dodging alien patrols and trying to organize scattered survivors without getting killed. And in the southeastern US, firearms instructor and former Marine Dave Dvorak finds himself at the center of a growing network of resistance--putting his extended family at lethal risk, but what else can you do? On the face of it, Buchevsky's and Dvorak's chances look bleak, as do prospects for the rest of the surviving human race. But it may well be that Shongairi and the Hegemony alike have underestimated the inhabitants of that strange planet called Earth... in David Weber's Out of the Dark. Out of the Darkness by Marion Crook Summary

Teen suicide has long been considered one of society’s darkest secrets; the idea of troubled young people driven to take their own lives was a tragedy too horrible to contemplate, let alone talk about openly. But the fact remains that teen suicide is an issue that refuses to go away so long as young people in crisis have nowhere to turn. But now, in this age of frank discussions about bullying, peer pressure, and issues of "difference," there is a growing sense that teen suicide is no longer a taboo subject, and that talking about it can help us to identify and acknowledge the kind of problems that lead teens to make such drastic and tragic decisions. Based on interviews with teen suicide survivors, -parents, and professionals, Marion Crook sensitively explores all aspects of teen suicide, in particular the -reasons why certain young people are driven to it. The motives are far-ranging, but central to all is a sense of desperation. Despite their dire circumstances, however, many found a way out of the darkness and into adult lives of meaning and worth. Marion Crook also examines the history of teen suicide in Western and other cultures, as well as what roles parents and schools can play in suicide prevention, and coping strategies for teens in crisis. Out of the Darkness is a book for both teens and adults that breaks the silence surrounding teen suicide, offering hope for those who think there is none. Marion Crook has spent the last fifteen years actively researching the difficulties teens face, relying on the expertise of the teens themselves. This is her twenty-third published book. She teaches at the university in Surrey, B.C. while continuing to research and write.

Out of the Darkness by Albert Dawson Summary

The exploration and settling of the Western frontier, the inflammatory but inspiring events of the Civil War, and the tragedy, drama, and victorious effort exemplified in World War II are the three focal points of this anthology. Several stories are loosely based on actual happenings: Home So Far Away, Amerikaner, and Lost. Each story in varying ways focuses on and portrays the resiliency of the human spirit when individuals are confronted with life-threatening situations. It is our hope as readers that we can discover within ourselves traits that would inspire us to act heroically if thrust into similar circumstances. This focus is found in all stories but predominantly in the cornerstone title Out of the Darkness, a two-part WWII narrative whose main character, Niko, sets an example for us all. The reader should know that every main protagonist in each story is based on real human beings that the author has interviewed and come to know as friends and subsequently deduced that these persons could in all likelihood do what their fictional characters achieved.

Out of the Darkness by Clyde W. Tombaugh,Patrick Moore Summary

An adventure in scientific discovery Pluto, the farthermost planet in the solar system, some 3,673 million mites from the Sun, was discovered by Clyde Tombaugh at the Lowell Observatory in 1930. The fiftieth anniversary of Pluto's discovery will be celebrated in 1980 and OUT OF THE DARKNESS: THE PLANET PLUTO tells the exciting scientific story of the twenty-five year search for a planet X beyond Neptune, and its discovery-the only planet found in the twentieth century. The planets Mercury, Venus. Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn were all known since antiquity. Then Sir William Herschel discovered Uranus in 1781, and 65 years later, in 1846, Johann Calle and Urbain le Verner discovered Neptune. Variations in orbital perturbations of the planets and theoretical astronomy were responsible for predicting and discovering the three outermost planets (Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto) and so Pluto's story is also, to some extent, the story of its planetary neighbors. What kind of world is Pluto? Much is still a mystery (its exact size, for instance), but there are some facts. It takes 247.7 years for Pluto to revolve around the sun. From Pluto's surface, the Sun appears as a star-like point; giving only on-one-hundredth the light Earth receives, although it is still brighter than a full Moon. There is strong evidence to suggest that Pluto is an escaped satellite of Neptune, a sister moon of Triton that wandered off to become the farthermost planet revolving around the Sun. And the recent discovery of Pluto’s moon, Charon, and the speculation on a tenth planet beyond Pluto add to the mystery that still prevails 50 years after coauthor Clyde Tombaugh exclaimed “That’s it!” when he saw the change of position of a faint object on the photographic plates after examining millions of star images. That evening, the only man alive to discover a planet, went to the movies and saw Gary Cooper in The Virginian. The night sky was cloudy when he came out of the theatre, but his mind’s eye still saw the faint image of Pluto.

Out of Darkness, Shining Light by Petina Gappah Summary

ONE OF NPR’S BEST BOOKS OF 2019 “Engrossing, beautiful, and deeply imaginative, Out of Darkness, Shining Light is a novel that lends voice to those who appeared only as footnotes in history, yet whose final, brave act of loyalty and respect changed the course of it. An incredible and important book by a masterful writer.” —Yaa Gyasi, author of Homegoing “This is how we carried out of Africa the poor broken body of Bwana Daudi, the Doctor, David Livingstone, so that he could be borne across the sea and buried in his own land.” So begins Petina Gappah's powerful novel of exploration and adventure in nineteenth-century Africa—the captivating story of the loyal men and women who carried explorer and missionary Dr. Livingstone's body, his papers and maps, fifteen hundred miles across the continent of Africa, so his remains could be returned home to England and his work preserved there. Narrated by Halima, the doctor's sharp-tongued cook, and Jacob Wainwright, a rigidly pious freed slave, this is a story that encompasses all of the hypocrisy of slavery and colonization—the hypocrisy at the core of the human heart—while celebrating resilience, loyalty, and love.

Blowing Out the Darkness by Dr. David MacQuarrie, MD MA-ABS Summary

Blowing Out The Darkness takes a new look at emotional management. In reading this book, be prepared for an unusual and thought-provoking challenge as well as practical tools for the management of emotional life issues, especially anger and rage. The book offers practical tools for the resolution of emotional difficulties, especially those of depression, anger and rage. It provides in-depth discussion of the skills one can use in conflict, especially when the other person is non-cooperative. The identification and living of one’s values are emphasized. Additionally, the book provides a philosophic and practical perspective on the underlying processes of emotional maturity. It contends that a fundamental loss to our society has occurred with our emphasis on technology and objectivity, with the consequent devaluing of the skills of subjectivity. The skills of subjectivity are explored in detail and proposed as providing a place of healing, both for individuals and for society as a whole. We can live our lives differently; we can have a more effective society. Quotations from clients who have attended the workshop: SC, a 48-year-old woman with years of drug abuse and violent crimes. “So over the years I have gone to anger management programs, psychiatrists and psychologists to talk about my problem. Honestly, none of this helped. ... For almost two years now, I have been working with Dave ... I no longer think about not living, or harming others. Sure I still get angry, I am human. I know exactly what to do with the energy when it isn’t appropriate.” JS, a probation officer with more than 25 years experience, who has indicated that only two of about sixty of his clients has re-offended after attending my weekend workshop. “As a former client, and as a Probation Officer who has referred numerous clients to Dr. MacQuarrie over the past fifteen years, my focus is on results. The initial results I observe in clients (and this is true of my own experience as well) are --- surprisingly --- something intangible. There is just something different.” MP, a 47-year-old truck driver, deeply caught in frequent raging. “I had seen therapists before, numerous times. Have they helped? No, I walked out feeling more confused than when I walked in. No therapist has ever gotten into my head and to the root of my anger like David has.” Dr Ronald Potter-Efron, MSW, PhD, author of The Handbook Of Anger Management "Dr. MacQuarrie's book is a wonderful blend of psychology with philosophy. He utilizes well-designed metaphors and makes unexpected connections (e.g., "Energy is stored in two locations: story and muscles") to detail his model of healthy human functioning. Dr. MacQuarrie argues fearlessly in favor of full expression of affect in an era increasingly suspicious of intense emotionality. In addition, he provides interesting examples as well as relevant personal experiences, both of which add to the integrity of the volume."
