Inequity in the Technopolis by , Summary

Over the past few decades, Austin, Texas, has made a concerted effort to develop into a “technopolis,” becoming home to companies such as Dell and numerous start-ups in the 1990s. It has been a model for other cities across the nation that wish to become high-tech centers while still retaining the livability to attract residents. Nevertheless, this expansion and boom left poorer residents behind, many of them African American or Latino, despite local and federal efforts to increase lower-income and minority access to technology. This book was born of a ten-year longitudinal study of the digital divide in Austin—a study that gradually evolved into a broader inquiry into Austin’s history as a segregated city, its turn toward becoming a technopolis, what the city and various groups did to address the digital divide, and how the most disadvantaged groups and individuals were affected by those programs. The editors examine the impact of national and statewide digital inclusion programs created in the 1990s, as well as what happened when those programs were gradually cut back by conservative administrations after 2000. They also examine how the city of Austin persisted in its own efforts for digital inclusion by working with its public libraries and a number of local nonprofits, and the positive impact those programs had.

Lost in Austin by Jim Andersen Summary

In 1974 Jim Andersen and his wife, tired of the congestion and high taxes in California, decided to start a new life in rural Nevada. They settled on Austin, a town of about 250 people perched on a mountainside along the legendary Highway 50, “the loneliest road in America.” In the middle of the nineteenth century, Austin was a free-wheeling boomtown at the center of a silver bonanza. By the time the Andersens arrived, it had shrunk to a quiet, isolated community of self-sufficient souls who ran their lives, economy, and local government their own way, with ingenuity, wit, and a certain disregard for convention. Andersen’s account of his life in Austin is a charming, sometimes hilarious account of city folks adapting to life in a small town. He addresses such matters as making a living from a variety of odd jobs, some of them odder than others; serving as a deputy sheriff, deputy coroner, and elected justice of the peace, and administering Austin’s unique version of justice; raising a family; finding ways to have fun; and exploring the austerely beautiful backcountry of central Nevada. He also introduces some of Austin’s residents and their stories, and describes the way the community comes together for entertainment or to respond to crises.Lost in Austin is fascinating reading for anyone who cherishes nostalgic memories of living in a small town, or who contemplates moving to one. It offers an engaging portrait of a Nevada that exists far from the glitz and glitter of Las Vegas and Reno, “a happy Bermuda Triangle” where rugged individualism and community spirit flourish amidst sagebrush and vast open spaces.

Contributions submitted to the journal and dealing with semantics of data will be considered even if they are not within the topics in the list. While the physical appearance of the journal issues is like the books from the we- known Springer LNCS series, the mode of operation is that of a journal. Contributions can be freely submitted by authors and are reviewed by the Editorial Board. Contributions may also be invited, and nevertheless carefully reviewed, as in the case for issues that contain extended versions of the best papers from major conferences addressing data semantics issues. Special issues, focusing on a specific topic, are coordinated by guest editors once the proposal for a special issue is accepted by the Editorial Board. Finally, it is also possible that a journal issue be devoted to a single text.

The Lieutenant Governors of British Columbia by , Summary

The office of lieutenant governor has been a constant in British Columbia from the province’s colonial beginnings to the modern era. Originally tasked with selecting the province’s premier, giving royal assent to provincial legislation, and invested with the power to dismiss governments, the role of the Crown’s representative has continually evolved to meet the needs of society. Today the office’s constitutional powers largely focus on community functions, but the role of lieutenant governor is more than ceremonial. This was demonstrated after the 2017 provincial election when then Lieutenant Governor Judith Guichon accepted Premier Christy Clark’s resignation and asked NDP leader John Horgan to attempt to form government rather than call a new election. BC’s early lieutenant governors were the force behind infrastructure initiatives such as building roads, railways and ships, and investing in electric utilities and the forest industry. Although most came from the ranks of the British elite and often espoused policies that denied First Nations land rights and opposed the immigration of Chinese and Japanese people, over time the office became more representative of the province’s diverse population. In recent years, lieutenant governors have played an increasingly activist role, celebrating cultural excellence and promoting literacy, creativity, environmental awareness: Chinese Canadian David Lam (1988–95) had a mandate of intercultural understanding; Iona Campagnolo (2001–7), the first woman to hold the position in BC, focused on empowering youth and women, and fostering a spirit of public inclusiveness at Government House; Steven Point (2007-12), BC’s first Indigenous lieutenant governor, worked to establish libraries in First Nations communities. Chronologically arranged and rich with photographs, this work by historian Jenny Clayton paints a vivid picture of the lives of BC’s thirty lieutenant governors. Clayton’s biographical essays capture the distinct personalities and events that have characterized the office from 1871 to the present, offering a unique perspective on the evolution of the province.

More Than Enough by Joel L. Meredith Summary

THE DATE: January 26, 1955. It was my twentieth birthday. THE PLACE: A train on its way from Salt Lake City, Utah to Sacramento, California. I sat looking out a train window at the scenery speeding by. MY THOUGHTS: A jumble of emotions. I was on my way overseas to Korea to serve a tour of duty with the United States Air Force. But first I would stop at McClellan Air Force Base (AFB) near Sacramento for overseas processing. I was bitter about my overseas assignment, but I was glad that the Korean armistice had finally been signed. At least nobody would be shooting at me, and I wouldn't have to kill someone else in the name of war. Just a couple of weeks earlier, my girl friend had rejected my proposal of marriage. I had asked and asked God to give that girl to me for my wife. God had said no, and I was mad at Him. MORE TRAVEL: By train to Travis AFB, California and an overnight stay; by plane to Hickam AFB, Hawaii for a short two hour stopover; and by plane to Tokyo, Japan for three days. THE STORY BEGINS. The stopover in Tokyo, Japan for three days was for special orientation (no pun intended). In that short time, I Sampled Tokyo's night life, had sex with a Japanese girl in a back alley, and spent the night in a hotel room with a young Japanese prostitute. It wasnt my usual style, but then I was mad at God. I decided to hurt Him the only way I knew how: SIN, SIN, SIN. Soon I was in Korea starting my twelve month tour of duty. Being in Korea was not my idea of fun, but there were certain diversions to take my mind off my misery. I drank a bit, partied a bit, and enjoyed the services of several Korean prostitutes a lot. Finally, I got tired of partying and settled for shacking up with a Korean girl named Peggy. We rented a room in a village not far from the Air Force compound where I was stationed. This village hideaway gave me some respite from being on call 24 hours a day. In spite of all this, I continued my lifelong habit of praying every night before going to sleep. Then there came a time that my nightly prayers stopped: I couldn't continue to ask God to forgive me for fornication when I had no real intention of stopping, let alone marrying Peggy. Immersed in guilt, I started seriously considering suicide. My dislike for service life and the poor living conditions in Korea helped to deepen my depression. It seemed as though others also had similar wishes for me when one of my fellow airmen said to me in an angry tone, "Meredith, if I were you I'd kill myself!" And then a few days later, Peggy, in reference to some situation, said, "If I was in a fix like that, I'd kill myself!" One morning, after spending the night in the village with Peggy, the two of us were walking in the rain along the bank of a small river which was swollen and quite swift due to the heavy seasonal rains. Normally, it would have been a simple matter to cross the river further upstream near the village where Peggy lived, but the water there was now about chest deep. We were therefore walking downstream to a bridge that crossed the river. At that point, the highway to Seoul also crossed the river. Peggy was going to catch a bus to Seoul, and I was headed back to the Air Force compound. As we rounded a bend in the river, a commotion in the river caught our attention. It was an elderly Korean farmer being swept downstream by the raging current. He was on his back and unable to right himself because of a heavy wooden plow strapped to his back! I quickly emptied my pockets, kicked off my rubber Korean shoes, and jumped into the water. (My Boy Scout training was about to pay off!) I quickly reached the old man, pulled him loose from the plow, and got him safely to shore. Then I rescued his plow. The old man was cut and bleeding from the pounding hed taken from being swept against the large boulders in the river, but his wounds did not appear serious enough for emergency first ai

Some Men by Michael A. Messner,Max A. Greenberg,Tal Peretz Summary

What does it mean for men to join with women as allies in preventing sexual assault and domestic violence? Based on life history interviews with men and women anti-violence activists aged 22 to 70, Some Men explores the strains and tensions of men's work as feminist allies. When feminist women began to mobilize against rape and domestic violence, setting up shelters and rape crisis centers, a few men asked what they could do to help. They were directed "upstream," and told to "talk to the men" with the goal of preventing future acts of violence. This is a book about men who took this charge seriously, committing themselves to working with boys and men to stop violence, and to change the definition of what it means to be a man. The book examines the experiences of three generational cohorts: a movement cohort of men who engaged with anti-violence work in the 1970s and early 1980s, during the height of the feminist anti-violence mobilizations; a bridge cohort who engaged with anti-violence work from the mid-1980s into the 1990s, as feminism receded as a mass movement and activists built sustainable organizations; a professional cohort who engaged from the mid-1990s to the present, as anti-violence work has become embedded in community and campus organizations, non-profits, and the state. Across these different time periods, stories from life history interviews illuminate men's varying paths--including men of different ethnic and class backgrounds--into anti-violence work. Some Men explores the promise of men's violence prevention work with boys and men in schools, college sports, fraternities, and the U.S. military. It illuminates the strains and tensions of such work--including the reproduction of male privilege in feminist spheres--and explores how men and women navigate these tensions.
