A teen from Ohio discovers he's the last in a long line of magical warriors chosen to fight to the death. Before he knew about the Roses, sixteen-year-old Jack lived an unremarkable life in the small Ohio town of Trinity. Only the medicine he has to take daily and the thick scar above his heart set him apart from the other high-schoolers. Then one day Jack skips his medicine. Suddenly, he is stronger, fiercer, and more confident than ever before. And it feels great—until he loses control of his own strength and nearly kills another player during soccer team tryouts. Soon, Jack learns the startling truth about himself: He is Weirlind; part of an underground society of magical people who live among us. The Heir by SHASH BENURWAR Summary

Set in the last century, starting from the mid-thirties to the end of the millennium, this is a story of a Marathi Brahmin Family that goes through many ups and downs through the sands of time. Over the years due to variety of reasons, Brahmins have lost their foothold in the same land they call their own, starting from social boycott for their religious fanaticism, coming out of their vanity about superiority over the other castes, to the total devastation after Gandhi’s assassination and land reforms. The matriarch of the family, though undereducated by today’s standards, is worldly-wise and carries the burden of entire families from both sides courageously and comes out valiant in her efforts to keep the dignity of her husband’s family intact. She has a secret hidden deep down in the labyrinths of her mind that, if surfaced, would have not only devastated the entire family but would have tarnished the image held so far in high esteem. While doing so, she has to make many sacrifices on her personal front, which she braves nonchalantly without compromising either on her poise or intelligence. All in all, The Heir is the story of marginalized Brahmins in today’s context, who, too, had to face the hell to reach where they are today through their perseverance and intelligence!

The Heir Presumptive and the Heir Apparent by Mrs. Oliphant Summary

Lord Frogmore was about sixty when his step-brother, John Parke, his heir presumptive, announced to him one day his desire to marry. John was thirty-five, the son of another mother, with whom, however, Lord Frogmore had always lived in the best intelligence. A more indulgent elder brother could not be. He had never himself married, or even thought of doing so, so far as anybody knew. He had considered John’s interests in everything. Had he been his father instead of his elder brother he could not have been more thoughtful. Whether perhaps it was John’s advantage he was thinking of when he remained unmarried was another matter, though you would have supposed that was the elderly peer’s only notion to hear how John’s mother spoke of it. At all events it was very much to John Parke’s advantage. His creditors did not press him, his tailor and he were the best friends in the world, everything was in his favor in life, and in London, where even his little extravagancies were greatly encouraged and smiled upon. Heir presumptive, the Honorable John Parke: that one line in the “Peerage” made life very smooth for John.

The Heir and the Sage, Revised and Expanded Edition by Sarah Allan Summary

A comprehensive analysis of the transformations of ancient history in early Chinese texts. This book presents a comprehensive analysis of the accounts of change of rule in Chinese texts from 600 to 100 BC, including the core philosophical works of the Chinese tradition attributed to Confucius, Mozi, Mencius, Xunzi, Hanfeizi, and Zhuangzi. Drawing from the early structuralism of Claude Lévi-Strauss, Sarah Allan demonstrates that similar motifs repeat in every period, and argues that they serve, like myth, to mediate the inherent social conflict between kinship relations and that of the larger community. This conflict is embodied in the idea of a dynastic cycle, founded by a virtuous sage king and passed down hereditarily until a last evil ruler is again replaced, and played out at regular intervals in legends of kings and ministers, heirs and sages, ministers and recluses, regents and rebels. Each philosophical text transforms the legends in a systematic manner to reflect its own understanding of the patterns of history that inform the present. In this revised and expanded edition, Allan has added translations and original Chinese texts, as well as a new introduction further analyzing structuralism and discussing how the book remains relevant to ongoing sinological arguments. An earlier article by Allan, with supporting evidence for this book’s thesis, is included as an appendix.
